Tamagotchi vs Digimon anime debate

Description

Forget Pokemon vs Digimon for a moment. We all know the result. Pokemon games rule and Digimon animes rule.

Let's make another debate focusing on the Digimon anime; versus an anime based on fellow Bandai brand (and the reason why Digimon exists to begin with), Tamagotchi. Without further ado, let's compare & contrast these overlooked animes before making the final say:

Premise: The Digimon anime follows a group of seven children who were enjoying themselves at Summer Camp when they are suddenly teleported into a parallel world which is digital and home to creatures known as Digimon. Becoming Digimon Tamers and enlisting the trust and responsibility in caring for their Digimon Partners, they must put life & limb at stake to fight building-sized villains and protect the Digital World and Earth.

The Tamagotchi anime is approachingly different, being more of a slice-of-life series instead of an adventure series. It follows inventor Mametchi, hair perfectionist Memetchi, food loving Kuchipatchi, their friends (or Tama-Friends, as the anime calls it), and their daily interactions with each other.

Emotion: When people compare the Digimon anime to the Pokemon anime, they phrase the former's moments of sacrifice, vulnerability, and tragedy for the characters. Here is a compilation of examples of Digimon's emotional scenes: www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKYs61…

Most episodes of the Tamagotchi anime, on the other hand, are pretty cheerful and innocent in their own right. No real villains (if you don't count the Spacy Brothers who want to take over Tamagotchi Planet, but are too bashful to admit their goals), and conflicts, if any, aren't too major and get resolved pretty easily through teamwork. However, saga finales are where the Tamagotchi anime's emotion really perks up. Here's the saga finales that I'm referring to: www.youtube.com/watch?v=mc84aw…, www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOip6p…, www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrJZgl…, & www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cCqmW….

Characters: The Digimon anime has a range of characters, both human and Digimon. Tai has Agumon, Yamato has Gabumon, Sora has Biyomon, T.K. has Patamon, Mimi has Palmon, Izzy has Tentomon, Joe has Gomamon, and Kari has Gatomon.

The Tamagotchi anime has Mametchi (a young inventor whose inventions often malfunction), Memetchi (a girl whose curl on the top of her head is very important to her), Kuchipatchi (a little guy with a huge appetite), Lovelitchi (a gentle girl who lives a double-life that lies the  celebrity talk of the whole Planet), Melodytchi (an outgoing violinist who becomes Lovelitchi's best Tama-Friend), Moriritchi (a happy-go-lucky fashion designer who represents the Tamamori brand), and Himespetchi (a daydreamer with a huge crush on Mametchi), just to name a few. However, there's not many humans. Counting movies, only 4 appeared in the whole series.

Progression: Digimon has numerous follow-ups, including Tamers, Frontier, Data Squad, Fusion, and most recently; Appmon, none of which have the same characters as the original adventure series. The Characters from the adventure series all return, albeit in their senior high school ages, in the 6-film series Digimon Adventure Tri.

The Tamagotchi anime was preceded by two movies and followed by three follow-ups; two of which feature Mametchi, Memetchi, and Kuchipatchi with new main characters, and one which features every single character throughout the series. After that, the series ended and got replaced by an anime called Kamisama Minarai: Himitsu no CocoTama, although a short film called Tamagotchi: Secret Delivery Operation was recently released alongside that anime's film adaption.

International Recognition: The Digimon anime began airing in the US on Fox Kids. The Short-lived network was sold to Disney by Fox, and thus, Digimon moved to Jetix and ABC Family. After Saban re-acquired their brands from Disney (including English Digimon), the series currently airs reruns on Nicktoons.

Despite being a huge American fad back in it's day, Tamagotchi never saw a US release of it's anime adaption, not counting the Tamagotchi Friends webisodes, which were divided versions of the anime's second saga. A short-lived English dub consisting of the first 26 episodes aired on Australian network 9GO! from 2010-2014. Australian company MadMan Entertainment released an English dub of the first Tamagotchi movie and had plans to also release a dub of the second movie, but they were shelved for unknown reasons. However, an English dub of the second movie did air in the Philippines at one time, but it's really hard, if possible, to find, since it aired as a TV Movie there.

Homages to the other: Tamagotchi has never made any Digimon references, persuming due to a completely different approach in genre. However, Digimon has snuck in a couple of references to their distaff ancestors. For one, Nanimon is clearly Oyajitchi mutated to gain the might of a Digimon. For another, Wizarmon's staff resembles a Tamagotchi device.

So which Bandai anime do you think is superior? Digimon or Tamagotchi?
